For Small Businesses

New changes to the QEE program have created special opportunities for small business owners. The change in the law creates a unique opportunity for community-minded small business owners to support local private schools and help deserving students gain access to a quality education – all without increasing their overall expenses.

Under the 2013 changes to the law, each member of an LLC, shareholder in an ‘S’ corporation or partner in a partnership can be eligible for QEE tax credits on the portion of the company’s income on which they paid taxes, up to $10,000. For example, a husband and wife who own and operate several businesses – fast-food franchises, for instance – may be eligible for up to $10,000 each in tax credits, depending on their income and by filing separately.

We expect this new provision in the law to be extremely popular with entrepreneurs and small business owners who want to support deserving private schools and students. So, interested donors should plan to act quickly when the next tax credit period opens on January 1, 2014. This change will probably mean that available tax credits will be claimed at an even faster pace than in years past.

[Note: On this and other aspects of the QEE program, the Georgia Student Scholarship Organization, Inc., encourages interested donors to seek counsel from qualified tax preparers about your eligibility.]
